StratOp
A Strategic Operating Plan for business that uniquely blends the Strategic (planning for tomorrow), the Operational (planning for today) and the Financial (planning appropriate funding) into a succinct format that makes effective execution realistic
Under the leadership of a skilled facilitator the executive team of the firm creates a living core plan - the foundation of StratOp - in just three days!
.
StratOp is a behaviorally sound team based process created by Tom Paterson, business visionary, senior advisor to countless major corporations and close associate of Peter Drucker. It is based on Tom's principles known as the Paterson Process.
The Paterson Process manages the whole of the organization. It is cross-functional - a new system to manage and integrate the strategic, operational and financial components of the organization. It encompasses six key phases. The six phases of the Paterson Process are listed below and address the following key questions: Perspective - Where are we now? Core Plan - Where are we going? Action - What must be done? Structure - Does our form follow substance? Control and Learning - How are we doing? Renewal - What needs to change?
Identification of internal and external realities and future truths as a basis for planning.
Development of an architecture of success, a unified master design.
Unified implementation of the core plan through action initiative teams working to defend milestones and goals.
Development of a structure for executing the unified plan through appropriate and timely decision making.
Management of the plan through strategic control panels. Continuous improvement through the elimination of everything which does not add value.
Automatic adaptation built into the management process to keep the enterprise viable and healthy.
StratOp enables the right blend of leaders to discover the absolute truth of where the organization is today, and where it needs to go. It boils the strategic plan down to its essence - to one page - the signature Plan on a Page. The leadership creates the plan, and as a result they own the plan, which is key for successful implementation.
What I do
As a skilled facilitator, I create the environment that includes and involves all of the players on the team, and then guide the process that leads to breakthrough thinking. Over the course of three days I lead and help you:
- Achieve unity in the executive core team
- Gain true perspective on the organization and clearly see the internal and external patterns and trends
- Create a customized living core plan
- Clearly define the Mission, Vision, and Big Idea Core Strategy of the organization
- Determine what is important now - the action initiatives that will drive your plan of action
- Identify and create the cross-functional teams that will be responsible for implementation of the plan
During the next 3-4 weeks I guide you as you lead your newly created cross-functional teams to build the plan of action for each of the previously identified action initiatives.
In preparation of the launch of your new strategic operating plan I facilitate a two-day process to review the work of each team, looking for comprehensiveness, sequential thinking, realistic timelines, and budget alignment.
After the creation of the signature Plan-On-A-Page and the StratOp Playbook I guide you towards self-sufficiency in your monthly and quarterly plan reviews. I teach you the process used to read the signs of change and recognize when renewal is necessary.
My role as a facilitator is to guide you to self-sufficiency

What others say:
"The Paterson Process allows you to, in a systematic way, identify all the critical elements necessary for the success of a project, explain it to upper management for approval, and communicate it to the project team. After an intense 2 days, we walked away with an action plan that could easily have taken us a month to formulate on our own"
Ben Randazzo | Director of International Sales, W.W. Grainger, Inc.
“The key to the Paterson Process is its simplicity. With a reasonable amount of training, the process can be used to analyze virtually any business question. It uses the collective wisdom of those who are closest to the business to focus the issues and set the priorities for moving forward. It’s a proven winner!"
Thomas Bennett| Retired President and CEO, Ingersoll-Dresser Pump Co.
“Tom's [Paterson] process is, in my opinion, unmatched. Tom's unique Convergence methodology brings his participants up to the ’40,000 foot’ level. Tom’s approach is not prescriptive; rather, it addresses the collective wisdom and develops a plan to which the team is totally committed, having full pride of authorship and ownership. Tom is a master at what he does so well…he has very effectively taught others to emulate his approach by skillfully embracing the basic tenets of the methodology."
Gary Liebl| Chairman of the Board, Artisoft, Inc.
“I have used the Paterson Process to launch a new project to develop and promote pre-engineered pumping packages. This particular project has been addressed numerous times in the past without success. By using the Paterson Process we have gained true perspective which has enabled us to identify the core issues which need to be addressed in order to realize the vision we established.”
